In Memoriam

Our departed Bayley classmates and friends remembered

Carl Mayer (’62)

Matt Mayer wrote to inform of us the passing of his father, Carl H. Mayer ('62), a proud Bayley and University of Dayton graduate. Carl's obituary: Carl Hugo Mayer Sr., son of Margaret and Charles Mayer, died Thursday, September 8, 2016 after a long battle with liver disease. Carl lived his life with a passion for his faith and a strong connection to the University of Dayton ('66). Born in Newark, New Jersey on September 3, 1944, Carl spent a majority of his adult life in Ohio following a tour in Vietnam as a Captain in the U.S. Army. During his time in Vietnam, Carl worked closely with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam to train their military forces for fighting the North Vietnamese Army. Carl received a Bronze Star, an Army Commendation Medal, and an Armed Forces Honor Medal for his service in Vietnam. For his Bronze Star, Carl “distinguished himself by meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force during the period October 1968 to September 1969.” Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Rutherford Funeral Home, 450 West Olentangy Street, Powell, Ohio. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am Monday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 6899 Smoky Row Road, Columbus. Interment will follow the mass at Resurrection Cemetery at 9571 North High Street. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Carl's name can be made to the Bernard F. And Irene C. Kroger Memorial Scholarship at the University of Dayton at 300 College Park, Dayton, Ohio 45469-7053.

Richard John Dowling (’68)

We have been informed by his wife, Susan Akers, that Richard J. Dowling ('68) passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2016 after a long battle with prostate cancer. Susan and Richard went to a few reunions in recent years and he was always glad to catch up with folks he'd gone to school with at Bayley-Ellard. There will be a memorial service for him on Saturday 8/20/16 at 2pm at the Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home in Whippany. All who knew him are welcome to come.

Greg Mericle (’71)

Michael Cramer ('71) writes: It saddens me to inform the class that Greg Mericle passed away on April 24, 2014 of an apparent heart attack. He was a good friend.

Peter Haynes (’79)

Peter Haynes passed away on May 9, 2013, in New York City. More information can be found about Peter online here.
